The Shelf Signal

Ingredient-hero sweeteners

Nicheverdict · Nov 2, 2026

Dates, honey and fruit named on the front of pack, so "no refined sugar" reads as an ingredient rather than a removal.

Brands are putting the sweetener on the front of the pack: date-sweetened chocolate and granola, date caramel and syrup, ketchup and barbecue sauce sweetened with dates, honey in new formats. The SFA's 2026 Summer Fancy Food Show report called it inside-out innovation, with brands leading on what is in the product rather than what was taken out.

It works because shoppers trust an ingredient they recognize more than a sweetener they cannot pronounce. The risk is the claim: dates and honey are still sugar, and "no added sugar" on a sweet product invites confusion and scrutiny. Watch whether date-sweetened lines repeat at $6 to $9 a bar or stay a trial purchase.
