Background

Yōshoku is Japan's century-old take on Western comfort food: curry rice, omurice, katsu, fluffy milk bread, strawberry sandos. Whole Foods' 2027 list puts it on the US grocery shelf, following the path matcha and mochi took from specialty to mainstream.

It lands because it is familiar and new at once. A Japanese curry block or a milk-bread loaf asks nothing of the shopper except curiosity, and the formats already exist in frozen, bakery and center store. Watch bakery and frozen first; the tell will be whether a conventional retailer merchandises it outside the international set.
