The Shelf Signal

Fiber frenzy and protein + fiber

Added fiber across the pantry, from sodas to tortillas, as the next functional claim after protein.

Shelf verdict
Fad

Protein-and-fiber positioning offers a clear way to communicate the composition of familiar staples. The strongest commercial case will come from products people enjoy and use routinely, rather than the largest numbers on the pack.

The operator's take

What to do with this

Reviewed Oct 30, 2026
Formats to investigate
Bean-based meals, lentil pasta, oats, seeded crackers, tortillas and snack bars.
Proposition to test
An easy upgrade to an existing meal or snack, with clearly stated protein and fiber per serving.
Biggest obstacle
A stronger nutrition claim can come with a taste, texture, price or tolerance tradeoff that discourages repeat purchase.
What would change this verdict
Repeat use at the intended serving size, acceptable product experience and sales that hold after introductory promotions.
Practical next step
Compare products within one familiar occasion, such as lunch or afternoon snacking. Evaluate taste, price and repeat intent alongside the nutrition information.
Background

Fiber is the next functional claim after protein, and increasingly paired with it. Whole Foods' 2026 list called "fiber frenzy" and Kroger's 2026 forecast called out protein-plus-fiber products like chickpea pasta and high-fiber bars; "fibermaxxing" gave it a name online.

The tailwind is GLP-1 and gut health at once: fiber keeps people full and feeds the microbiome. The risk is the protein playbook repeating itself, with fiber stuffed into products that do not need it. The winners will be whole-food formats where fiber is natural to the product, plus a few smart fortified staples.
